BULLYING, TEASING & TEEN SUICIDE
16, 2002 when Cathy Gettle’s 14-year-old son, Jon decided to walk to his middle
school and hang himself, leaving a note stating “Bullying is a
problem…Depression is a problem,” she decided to speak out about what bullying
and teasing did to her son. She has spoken to numerous school boards, schools,
parent-teacher organizations, student organizations, churches, scout
organizations and other organizations that have dealt with children and young
adults. She has been on radio station talk shows, appeared on a Christian
Broadcasting TV show titled “Joy in Our Town” in Ottawa, IL on two separate sessions and once on "Comcast Tonight" in Reading, PA. Several newspapers have written articles about her.
died of suicide, Cathy has also been an advocate of suicide prevention. She has
been trained to be a gatekeeper with Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program.
She has become involved with American Foundation for Suicide Prevention by
participating in the Out of the Darkness Overnight and Community walks to raise
money for research and education of suicide prevention. She was involved with
Lebanon County (PA) Youth Suicide Prevention Task Force and helped to facilitate
a Suicide Survivor Support Group in Lebanon, PA.
