BULLYING, TEASING & TEEN SUICIDE

Summary Information:

On April 16, 2002 when Cathy Gettle’s 14-year-old son, Jon decided to walk to his middle school and hang himself, leaving a note stating “Bullying is a problem…Depression is a problem,” she decided to speak out about what bullying and teasing did to her son. She has spoken to numerous school boards, schools, parent-teacher organizations, student organizations, churches, scout organizations and other organizations that have dealt with children and young adults. She has been on radio station talk shows, appeared on a Christian Broadcasting TV show titled “Joy in Our Town” in Ottawa, IL on two separate sessions and once on  "Comcast Tonight" in Reading, PA. Several newspapers have written articles about her.

Since Jon died of suicide, Cathy has also been an advocate of suicide prevention. She has been trained to be a gatekeeper with Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program. She has become involved with American Foundation for Suicide Prevention by participating in the Out of the Darkness Overnight and Community walks to raise money for research and education of suicide prevention. She was involved with Lebanon County (PA) Youth Suicide Prevention Task Force and helped to facilitate a Suicide Survivor Support Group in Lebanon, PA.
